“Fighting for our Rights!”: Using non-discrimination law to protect people with disabilities

The overall purpose of this project was to influence the implementation process of the Framework Directive regarding Non-Discrimination in Employment (Council Directive 2000/78/EC) in order to maximize its positive effects for people with intellectual disability. The project aimed at promoting the establishment of a code of good practice to set up the way in which the directive should be implemented.

This project should also develop a comprehensive partnership with actors at different levels and education and awareness programs concerning the operation of the Directive from a disability rights perspective.

Results

The project had 2 phases:

• During the first phase, partners produced a report called "Using Non-Discrimination Law to Protect People with Disabilities" which contains an easy-to-read summary.

• During the second phase an easy-to-read brochure about discrimination in employment was translated in all EU languages.

National seminars were also organised in 12 European countries to develop training materials and to explain the non-discrimination laws to self-advocates, families and lawyers.
